Our Story
In November 2014, Hong Li set out to reinvent herself from, a Chemical Engineer to Cook of the celebrated Chinese street food, the humble dumpling.
A former Newcastle Student having achieved her Masters degree here in Engineering, Hong Li would entertain her friends and family at home with her handmade dumplings. With a need for a better work life balance Hong Li refocused her career and ambition; keen for a flexible opportunity that allowed her to raise her son, support her husband in his career and give herself something to get her teeth into.
'Dumpling and Bun' was born.
Opening in alley two in a small unit initially, Hong Li has recently located to a much larger premises in the market. Her shop is persistently busy from 9 AM until the market closes.
Ever the scientist, Hong Li has both innovated her dough recipe as well as taking the bold step to steam her dumplings - which she makes by hand with her team fresh every day, rather than the traditional cooking method of boiling. This method has made for a firmer, more flavourful dumpling, which is a clear hit with the city and visitors; with many of her Chinese customers making 'Dumpling and Bun' their top priority destination for a taste of home.
The regions business awards as 'Best Takeaway she is now a national finalist! With plans to open up her indoor seating area, add more to her menu; which currently has a seasonal range of dumplings, steamed buns, soup, and choice of Asian beers such as Asahi, Tiger or Tsing Tao, and her special blend of Jasmine Tea. There is something for everyone, Dumpling and Bun is an authentic taste of China with a winning formula that's a treat for the tastebuds!
